Give yourself permission to enjoy summer
Summer is here. And with it comes vacations, long weekends, disrupted schedules, late nights, and the very real possibility that your structured workout routine is going to look a little different for a few weeks.
I want to be the first person to tell you: that’s completely okay.
I want to go further than that actually. I want to give you full permission to unplug this summer without guilt, without shame, and without the feeling that you’re somehow undoing everything you’ve worked for.

Rest Plays an Important Role in Your Fitness Routine
Rest is productive. Planned breaks from structured training allow your body to recover, your nervous system to regulate, and your relationship with movement to reset. Coming back after genuine rest often means coming back stronger, more motivated, and more connected to why you started in the first place.
The all-or-nothing mentality that says if you miss a week of workouts you’ve failed? That’s not fitness. That’s fear. And you don’t have to live there.
Movement Looks Different in Summer and That’s the Point
What I love about summer is that movement becomes joyful again. It stops being something you schedule and starts being something that just happens naturally.
Maybe that looks like swimming in the ocean or a lake, hiking a trail you’ve never been on, long walks exploring a new city, paddleboarding, kayaking, or cycling, dancing at a concert or a wedding, or just chasing your kids or your dog around outside.
None of that looks like a structured workout, all of it counts. Your body doesn’t know the difference between a gym session and two hours of exploring a new city on foot. It just knows it’s moving, and it responds accordingly.

What to Do When You’re Traveling
If you want to stay connected to some structure while you’re away, here’s what I actually recommend to clients:
Keep it simple. A 20 minute bodyweight circuit in your hotel room is enough to maintain what you’ve built. You don’t need equipment, a gym, or a perfect setup. Just a little floor space and the willingness to show up for yourself.
Prioritize protein. Vacation eating is one of life’s great pleasures and I’m absolutely not here to take that away from you. Keeping protein relatively consistent helps your body maintain muscle even when training volume drops. Look for eggs at breakfast, fish or chicken at dinner, Greek yogurt as a snack. Enjoy everything else without guilt.
Stay hydrated. Travel, heat, and alcohol all increase your hydration needs. Drinking enough water is one of the simplest things you can do to feel good on vacation.
Walk everywhere you can. Skip the Uber when you can walk. Take the stairs. Explore on foot. You’ll see more, feel better, and move your body without it feeling like exercise at all.
Give Yourself Grace Around Food Too
Vacation eating is not cheating. Enjoying a meal without calculating its macros is not failure. Eating the pasta, the gelato, the local cuisine that you traveled to experience is part of living a full and joyful life.
Food is nourishment for your body, your mind, and your soul. A meal shared with people you love on a trip you saved up for nourishes all three. That matters.
The goal has never been to be perfect on vacation. It’s to enjoy your life while maintaining enough awareness to feel good in your body. Those two things can absolutely coexist.

Come Back When You’re Ready
Sustainable fitness isn’t about never taking a break. It’s about building a relationship with movement and your body that can flex with the seasons of your life. Summer is a season. Vacation is a season. Rest is a season. And coming back from a break can feel daunting, especially if you’ve taken more time off than you planned, but your body has muscle memory. The fitness you’ve built doesn’t disappear in a week or two, it’s waiting for you.
When you do come back, start where you are. Not where you were before vacation, not where you think you should be, just where you actually are right now. Be patient with the first week, let your body readjust, and trust that if you come back feeling more motivated and more grateful for your routine than before you left, that’s the rest doing exactly what it was supposed to do.
So go on the trip! Eat the food. Sleep in. Move your body in ways that feel joyful and free. You’ve worked hard, you’ve shown up consistently, and you’ve earned the right to enjoy your summer fully and without apology.
I’ll be here when you get back.

I’ll see you on the next blog.
